Yoni Steaming

Those of you close to me already know how passionate I am about yoni steaming. It is a practice that sounds simple on the surface. However, as I have cultivated my own personal relationship with it over the years, the more I understand why women have turned to it for centuries.

Yoni steaming has played a huge role in my own journey back to a healthy and regular cycle. As someone who has experienced irregular periods, this practice has been instrumental in bringing my body back into balance.

What yoni steaming can support

This gentle practice works by promoting circulation and warmth to the womb space, which can help with:

  • Regulating your cycle

  • Reducing period pain

  • Moving stagnation

  • Nourishing & tonifying the tissue

  • Supporting fertility and healthy blood flow

  • Releasing emotional trauma held in the womb space

  • An act of self love and body awareness

Beyond the physical, yoni steaming welcomes a beautiful sense of intimacy and awareness with your womb space, something so many of us were never taught to cultivate.

The herbs I love to use

Part of the magic is in the herbs, my go-to blend includes:

  • Rosemary – for circulation and clarity

  • Lavender – calming and soothing

  • Motherwort – a classic ally for womb and cycle support

  • Calendula – gentle and nourishing for the tissue

  • Rose – opens the heart, softens and restores

  • Mugwort – traditionally used to move stagnation

The best part is that this practice is simple and accessible,  you can even use fresh herbs straight from your garden at home! Otherwise, you can find these herbal blends at your local herbal or whole-food shops.

A practice as old as time

Yoni steaming (also known as vaginal steaming) has been passed down through generations of women across cultures, from Traditional Chinese Medicine to Mayan healing traditions. Long before modern wellness trends, women gathered around steaming pots of herbs as a form of communal care, postpartum recovery and cycle support. There is something powerful about knowing that you are taking part in a ritual that's been held by women for centuries.

At its core, the practice works through gentle warmth and moisture. The steam carries the therapeutic properties of the herbs upward, where the soft and absorbent tissue of the yoni can receive them. This warmth is thought to increase blood flow to the pelvic area, softening and relaxing the muscles and tissues around the womb. This is why yoni steaming provides gentle relief for women who experience period pain or a sense of heaviness and stagnation.

Every woman’s experience is different, however through my own personal journey with this practice and working with women,  I have found the below benefits to be true

  • A softening in the belly: many women notice tension they didn't realise they were holding in the pelvic area begins to release, sometimes during the steam itself.

  • Warmth and ease before your period: instead of dreading cramps, you may notice they become more gentle or your flow feels smoother and less clotted.

  • A shift in your emotional state:  the womb space is a place where we store old emotion, she holds the story. It may be common for emotional sensation to arise or feel unexpectedly light after a session.

  • A sense of ritual and slowing down: simply the act of setting aside 20 minutes to sit, breathe and tend to yourself can shift your nervous system into a more restful state.

  • Increased body awareness: over time, many women find they become more attuned to their cycle's natural rhythms, noticing ovulation, mood shifts and energy levels with more clarity.

  • More predictable timing: with consistent practice across a few cycles, some women notice their cycles becoming more regular.

When in your cycle to steam

A simple rule of thumb is about once or twice a cycle: in the days following your period or in the week before it begins, is a lovely rhythm to start with.

Avoid steaming during your period, pregnancy, if you have an IUD, an active infection, open wounds or have recently given birth.

The benefits often build with consistency. Steaming once won't transform your cycle overnight, but coming back to it moon after moon is where the real magic tends to happen.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Yoni steaming is a gentle practice, but it's always worth doing with care. Test the water temperature before you begin and do not steam if you are pregnant. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, it's always worth a conversation with a practitioner or please do not hesitate to connect with me here ~ I would love to help in any way I can!
